Ending the season in style, Downtown Gloucester's September Block Party offers a stellar mix of entertainment. Gloucester's impeccable Docksiders Big Band, a quintet of Boston jazz maestros and a variety of other talent play on five outdoor stages.
Pianist Bert Seager has assembled an exceptional group of musicians expressly for Block Party audiences. Jazz fans will enjoy the eminent bassist John Lockwood, 2 muscular tenor sax players Brian Levy and Henry Paz and the incomparable Joe Hunt on drums. These award-winning masters have played internationally with countless jazz icons including Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans and Gloucester's own, the late Herb Pomeroy.
The all ages event offers special attractions for Cape Ann seniors. Two Gloucester firms Sparx3 and Cape Ann Communications are sponsoring the Cape Ann Cinema where seniors can relax and enjoy free movies and snacks. Beauport Transportation Services has donated free shuttle service to pick up to and return seniors to their housing developments.
Stroll through Little Italy in west end for all things Italian and sing along at Giuseppe's. Stage acts include Willie Alexander and the Alek Razden band jamming as Will Loco and the Raztones. Expect to dance with the Downhome Swing Band and be amazed by Dr. Bones' Circus of Marvels. The Dog Bar cooks with fine reggae and soul from Runaround Sound and Smokin' Jim's Barbecue both in the back garden. Other bands and up and coming talent are still signing on.
Main Street restaurants offer dining under the stars and the street's many diverse shops are open late for shopping. Kids' Town has giant chess, chalk drawing, games and face painting to keep youngsters amused. Vendors are close by for snacks.
The Downtown Gloucester Block Party Series is a project of the non-profit Cape Ann Business Incubator.
